Exploration into Asemic Writing

This was my response to research into asemic writing and visual poetry, taking comfort in the illegible and pondering upon its meaning as an image as opposed to prose. Inspired by the work of Cy Twombly, Mirtha Dermisache and Henri Michaux, I developed my own process for creating visual poetry, relying on the medium of tracing paper to abstract type and handwriting to the point of illegibility.

Printing out pieces of text onto tracing paper, then folding the paper up and scanning it in was the process I used to create the imagery throughout this publication. The way the letters merge together at different points allows the reader to initially recognise the image as type, however due to its illegibility, it must be seen instead as an image.

The scans are then printed out again onto tracing paper which allows for different compositions to layer up on top of each other, causing more abstraction to the images. The publication is perfect bound, allowing the reader the rip pages out and hang them up as prints or create their own compositions with, bridging the gap between art and poetry through the formats of the book and hanging the pages on the wall.
